How To: Cope With Anxiety

Everyone feels anxious. It’s a normal emotion.

Anxiety disorder includes different conditions:

  1. Social anxiety disorder – when you feel overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations.
  2. Panic disorder – you feel terror which can strike at random. During a panic attack, you also sweat, have trouble breathing  and feel heart palpitations
  3. Generalized anxiety disorder – you can feel unrealistic worry and tension with no reason what-so-ever.
  4.  Specific phobias – there is an intense fear of a specific  situation. This fear may cause you to avoid ordinary situations.

Anxiety disorders share some general symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Sleep problems
  • Tense muscles
  • Dizziness
  • Not being able to stay calm and still
  • Cold, sweaty, numb or tingling hands or feet
  • Sleep problems

Managing Symptoms

  • Cut back on foods and drinks that have caffeine, like coffee, tea, pop and chocolate. Caffeine is a mood-altering drug, and may make symptoms of anxiety worse.
  • Eat right, exercise, and get  sleep. Brisk aerobic exercises like jogging and biking help release brain chemicals that cut stress and improve your mood.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter medications . Many contain chemicals that can make your anxiety symptoms worse.
